Amidst the madness of my daily routine packed with dealing with a child and many other random errands I was happy to learn about a 10 day yoga detox program being conducted here in Chennai last month. It was organized by Rutland Gate Yoga Studio and led by Shantala, the best yoga teacher I’ve known.
The program began with a discussion about yoga off the mat. Shantala began by introducing us (well, me at least!) to the term ‘MINDFULNESS’. It means being 100% present to the activity at hand. If you are cooking, eating, walking, BREATHING, playing with your child, folding clothes try being 100% mindful of what you are doing. We were then given a list of 24 questions to check mark everyday to detoxify ourselves and maintain a healthy lifestyle. A few of those questions were ‘Did you chew your food mindfully?, ‘Did you eat nutritious food?’, ‘Did you sleep well?’, etc. If you’d like a complete list of these questions, email me at moina[dot]memon[at]gmail[dot]com. These questions may seem basic, yet serve as simple reminders that can put us on the path towards a healthy lifestyle
Over the weekend we were asked to clean our closets at home – detoxifying our home also plays an important role in detoxifying our mind and body. We tend to hold onto really old stuff not realising that it could be of use to many others.
We were even asked to remove negative people from our lives. Shantala educated us that we need to cleanse our lives by doing away with toxic relationships and at the same time be mindful of not being a source of pain for others.
We also did some beautiful breathing exercises like nadishudha pranayam, cleansing practices of jalneti and kapalbharati and the beautiful relaxation prcatice of Yoga nidra which certainly helped us breathe better.
The last day was the highlight of the program where we were given healthy dark chocolate to eat and relish…mindfully! smile emoticon
A journey such as this does not only benefit the participants but also the friends and families of the participants. I think it was a beautiful 10 day journey and my goal is to continue to practice the knowledge that was imparted even though the program is over.
