A lot of educational institutions run Mom and me programs these days. But I wanted to make it personal for my daughter. Being a mom was the most enjoyable phase of life and thus I wanted to give parenting my best shot. I learnt and pushed my self to grow as a mother and researched to create my own ‘Homeschooling’ program for my 7 month old daughter. I would sing to her and read to her earlier on but I kept changing and adding on to her learning routine.
I knew that if the kid is not given a proper learning environment then he/she may get addicted to the TV and cartoons. Fortunately, I came across a workshop called ISP (infant siddha program). ISP is basically a parenting program which gave me an insight of dos and don’ts as parents. I got to know what to teach and how free the kid should be left so that he/she have the freedom to learn.
There are two aspects of early learning. One is feeding the kid with as much of information as one can. Second aspect is leaving the kid free to explore his world and absorb on his/her own. Kids from the age of 0 to 3 years has have high grasping power but very less attention span. Their brains grasp the information just like a sponge sucks water. We need to capture their attention and feed them with information. Flash cards helps in this area. Bigger fonts and brighter colours (Red) are used to make flash cards.
Initially, we started making flash cards manually and later started using a software called BrillKids. That made my life very easy. I could teach as many as 7 languages, Math, encyclopedia and music using this software. My daughter recently turned 3. She can recognize and read English, French, Telugu and Hindi words. She started reading English books with bigger fonts like Panchatantra story books.
Teaching Math was a challenge for me till I came to know the fact of Math. Traditional method of teaching math is to make the kid recognize the symbols of Math like 1 2 3 4….. but that doesn’t give the purpose of Math. Math need to be taught in quantities for example One means (one stick, balls ), two means (two sticks or balls or…), ten means (ten sticks or balls etc)…. Kids need to be skilled to recognize the quantities. As per Glenn Doman, young ones can differentiate between 100 dots and 99 dots if they are trained.
I also introduced painting, Jigsaw puzzles and creative activities when my daughter was 1 year old. She loves jigsaws and painting. Her motor skills are improved because of jigsaws. If you want to add more to these or don’t have access to any of these then just let your kid explore the kitchen. Exploring helps them in learning and remembering. Just starting with helping them hold a carrot or any fruit or vegetable, touching the texture or even biting on it is the beginning of learning. Other than this, a lot of information is available in the market in the form or montessori kits or just following any forum online helps us in teaching our kids.
Early education plays a vital role in a child’s development. I believe it is the foundation to a great life ahead. After all, home is the first school every child is exposed to.
